Principal’s Message
Public speaking is a long standing
tradition at Sullivan Community School and dates back to when the school opened
in 1969 as Sullivan Central School. In January our junior and
intermediate students were busy writing, memorizing and presenting their
speeches to their classmates. On February 5th, a select
group of students will proceed to our school level public speaking
competition. The top two students from each division are usually invited
to present their speeches at the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking
Competition which will be held at the Chatsworth Legion Branch on
Saturday, February 15th starting at 9:30am. We wish
our young orators the best of luck and we are very proud of their efforts and
courage to speak in front of an audience about a topic of personal interest to
them.
The
first Science Fair was held at Sullivan in 1982. This year the
Science and Heritage Fair projects will be presented in the gymnasium on
Tuesday, March 10th, 2020. Thank you to Mrs. Cottrill for
supporting students through the scientific inquiry process and science fair
project process and Mr. Arnold for offering the same coaching and support for
students working on Heritage Fair Projects. We are anticipating having
around 20 judges giving our students feedback during the school fair
day. We appreciate the community support for this event. Our
students learn a great deal about their fair topics, and the inquiry process as
well as developing numerous other skills such as research skills, note taking
and summarization, time management, organization, critical thinking, and
presentation skills. We look forward to seeing the topics students
present this year. The March newsletter will provide information on
when community members can come in to the school to see the projects.
The
Bluewater District School Board has recently introduced its new vision
statement, "Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow." You will begin
to see the new vision statement referenced on Sullivan Community School
letterhead and documents, beginning with the February 2020 Sullivan Stinger
Newsletter. Inquiry-based learning, such as Science Fair and Heritage
Fair projects, are great examples of how we are assisting our students today to
learn skills that will make them successful tomorrow. Similarly,
Stingers public speaking experience adds to their leadership skills.
